Will Data On A Hard Drive Withstand A Fire?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

Depends. The information stored on an HDD can, in some cases, be retrieved even after highly traumatic damage occurs. This includes fires. Of course the extent of the damage can vary widely, so a simple yes or no answer is impossible. I have seen, however, cases where the exterior of an HDD has been physically melted yet most of the data was able to be recovered. Your best option would be to find a professional service that specializes in data recovery (make sure to ask them about experience with your specific type of damage). This is NOT cheap, but if the data is worth it to you then it is your best choice.
