Stockholm is the capital of Sweden. It is the largest city in the Nordic region of Europe and is also the seat of the government of Sweden and the location of the Swedish Parliament, as well as the official residence of the head of state of Sweden, King Carl XVI Gustaf. Stockholm has been the capital of Sweden since the Charter was signed in the 13th century, recognising the city as the centre for political and economic power in Sweden. The census figures as on June 30, 2006 reveal that the municipality of Stockholm, the largest municipality in Sweden, has a population of 776, 000. The populations of the Stockholm urban area and Metropolitan Stockholm are 1, 212, 196 (as on December 31, 2000) and 1, 729, 274 (as on March 31, 2006). Stockholm is located at the mouth of Lake Malaren, near the Stockholm Archipelago. It is situated on the east coast of Sweden.
