    I would suggest that when you do think about them you start thinking about something else

      Not much without lots of mental discipline. Even if it hurts, look for the "trigger" an event, action, statement, whatever is making you think back to the past. Seek to find out what in your past is relational to the "trigger". Release the anger, anxiety, or whatever the emotion or feeling is and gradually you will stop thinking about it. Otherwise, you can only refocus your mind and energy on something else.
