The problem is that your engine light is on...get a reader, connect it to the car, and it will tell you what you problem is. There is no way to determine what the issue is based on what you are stating. It would be like me saying "my car doesn't start - why?". Could be out of gas, starter could be non-functioning, battery could be dead or missing, your car could have no engine in it...
