    The Panama Canal Treaties were finally concluded in the September of 1977. In June 1978 the President along with his wife and accompanied by twelve US Senators visited the country of Panama. His aim was to try and soften the policies both domestic and foreign of the regime there. The Regime was that of dictator and brutal military man Omar Torrijos.

    Omar torrijos or Omar Efrain Torrijos Herrera was born on the 13th of February 1929 until the year of his death in an incident on the 31st of July 1981. He was born in the capital of the Veraguas province of Panama known as Santiago. He was one of twelve children. He studied first at the Juan Demostenes Arosemena School and later at the San Salvador military Academy. His death in a plane accident is believed to have been orchestrated by the CIA when President Reagan came to power.
