A Duck Laid Her Eggs In Our Flower Bed Over 10 Weeks Ago. Haven't Hatched. Is There A Problem?

Answer Question

The average days it takes a duck's eggs to incubate before they hatch (from the time the mother lays the eggs) is about 28 to 35 days.  I'm thinking maybe those eggs either weren't fertilized, or they've gone bad by now.  Has she been sitting on them all this time?

Yes she has been sitting on them all this time. We have noticed that 3-5 eggs are missing. What should we do? Shew her away and get rid of the eggs?

You know, I think I would just leave them there. At some point, the mother duck is going to realize that too much time has gone by, and she will abandon them. Also, if you just leave them there, or just cover them up, the insides of the eggs will, in time, dry up. It's too bad that whatever happened in nature here didn't produce any ducklings, but maybe she'll be back next year and have better luck. Debossman is correct, though -- you don't want to break them open -- the smell is really nasty!

After 10 weeks all you have is some really ROTTON eggs. Be very careful in moving and discarding them. If you should drop or break one HOLD YOUR NOSE, this smell is 10 times worse than skunk.

The eggs are certainly not fertile, prolonged sitting isn't good for her, take the eggs away - carefully! After this long all of those eggs are putrid! Some may explode. Dispose of them somewhere where the stench won't bother anyone. I suppose that a skunk is getting the eggs, or a snake.
