World War One was won by the Allies, who comprised originally France, Poland and Britain - the three countries that declared war on Germany following its invasion of Poland in September 1939. They were joined almost immediately by Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Newfoundland and South Africa, all of which also declared war on Germany. Britain's Indian Empire and crown colonies around the world also joined the Allies. The Soviet Union joined the Allies in June 1941. The United States joined the war on the side of the Allies in December 1941, following the attack by the Japanese on their naval base at Pearl Harbour, Hawaii.
Other states which joined the Allies at various points during the war include Nepal, Tonga, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Greece, Yugoslavia, Panama, Philippines, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, China, Guatemala, Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Iraq, Iran, Ethiopia, Bolivia, Columbia, Albania, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Lebanon, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Argentina, Chile and Mongolia.
Five states changed sides and ended up on the winning side - Italy in 1943 (after the overthrow of Mussolini) and - following the Allied invasion of Normandy on D-Day in June1944 - Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary and Finland.
