There are great books and workshops at your local home improvement store, but here are a few:
Sponging uses the light base color you probably already have and a second darker color of your choice. Use a natural sea sponge (found at home improvement stores) to lightly dab the second color on the wall. It will produce a light texture as it is applied. For less texture, add a glazing medium (found in the paint department).
The same technique can be done with a small piece of plastic, a patterned roller, a small rag, or crumpled brown paper.

Special brushes or rollers can create lines in the paint called "dragging", almost as if you ran a comb down through the wet paint.

Any of these techniques can be tried/perfected on a piece of cardboard or poster board before trying on your new wall. All but the first technique are easily painted over when you're ready for a new change.

    Have fun!
