The novel The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett was a historic novel set during the 12th century. It centered on the lives of several people from different section of society and how the turbulent times of the English Civil War were affecting their lives.

The book also concerns the building of the Kings bridge Cathedral and the murder of Thomas Becket. There is presently a sequel to the book being written by Ken Follett which is due for release this year.

The book concerns the primary characters of Jack Jackson and Aliena; their years growing up, their misfortunes, their perseverance, their love for each other and finally their triumphs during that time in history. The book could be said to be very similar to the Cloister and the Hearth by Charles Reade; though of course the latter is a classic and is far, far better.
