Who Were The Main Characters In "Steptoe And Son"?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

This Galton and Simpson scripted comedy ran from 1964 to 1973. It was about a malevolent old rag and bone man, Albert Steptoe (Wilfred Bramble) and his trapped, socially aspirant son Harold (Harry H. Corbett.) The two live in the East End of London, in a state of squalor caused by Albert's messy habits; Harold, meanwhile, tries desperately to acquire the rudiments of culture and bring some beauty into their lives. His attempts at a larger existence are always frustrated by his father who keep s him in line with a combination of bullying, scorn and emotional blackmail. For the essence of the tragicomedy is that blundering Harold loves his father; when Albert wails that he can't be left alone, or feigns illness to get his way, Harold always gives in. In real life, the actors had a relationship almost as tormented as their on-screen one, with Corbett anxious to leave the series and be a "serious" actor, but never quite managing it. He also died several years before Bramble, though he was very much his junior.
