The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, the third instalment, is the 2nd highest grossing film of all time, behind Titanic. It earned over $1 billion in box office takings worldwide. The third film made a 1408% profit, including marketing.

    The total box office earnings for the trilogy is $2.92 billion, with the first three Harry Potter films not far behind at $2.64 billion. The Star Wars prequel trilogy is currently top, with total box office earnings at $2.424 million.
