    Could it be The Old Man and the Sea?  I've never read it, but I'm guessing this is the one you were looking to remember.

      Are you referring to, The Old Man and the Sea...?  The boy who was starving and wanted to become a fisherman, his friend deserts him because of the parents so he goes out into the dangerous sea alone.....alot of biblical references in the story also. Santiago is the old man....I forget the boys name...something like Manny (not quite). If this is what you are thinking of, yes, it was a good story. ;o)
