Answer Question

Swimming is the most popular sport in Australia. In the 2004 Olympics, Australia's medal tally in swim events was 15. Jodie Henry (swimming) 3 gold - Athens 2004, Petria Thomas (swimming) 3 gold - Athens 2004, Ian Thorpe (swimming) 3 gold - Sydney 2000, Shane Gould (swimming) 3 gold - Munich 1972, Murray Rose (swimming) 3 gold - Melbourne 1956

The first Australian to win an Olympic medal in swimming was Fred Lane for 1900 Paris Olympics. He won the 200 m freestyle and the 200m hurdle. Australia appears to be a sports lover's paradise. Tennis, rugby, soccer, cricket etc., all seems to be popular in Australia but swimming still remains the most popular.
