They were called the crusades and have been cleaned up to make them more palatable to Christian and non Christains in the modern world. Many innocent people were killed not only in battle but by execution afterwards. There were even a number of Christains who had lived in the city unmolested for some time but were butchered by the cusaders. Look up the full history and be shocked. As a Christian it is not a period that I care to think about too much, perhaps that is why my education taught me a completely different version that I believed until I cared to look again, a heritage best forgotten but important to remember accurately, like all truly wicked events in history, they teach us much.
