What Is The Welsh Name For New Port?
Answers
Newport is one of the largest city in Wales, situated on the banks of the river Usk and ranking third in size the first and second being Cardiff and Swansea. It forms a large urban area of the traditional county of Monmouthshire and governed by the unitary Newport City Council.
The city came to be established after the original port of Caerleon was found to unnavigable for bigger ships which necessitated the building of a new port which was referred to as Newport.
The Welsh name for the city is Casnewydd-ar-Wysg which actually means 'New castle-on-Usk'. This refers to the twelfth-century castle ruins found near the city centre.
Newport is also known by the Latin name Novus Burgus, meaning new borough or new town. The city was an important trading port in the middle ages and the proof of this was found when a 15th century ship was uncovered from the banks of the Usk.
