Can You Give Me Any Tips For Writing A Humorous Novel?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

It depends what type of humorous novel you are looking to write. If it is a parody you want to write, then perhaps you could look at some existing parodies to help you. The obvious thing with parodies is that they mock the original story. Names of characters and places are usually changed to a silly name that rhymes with the original e.g. 'Bored of the Rings' for 'Lord of the Rings' and 'Barry Trotter' for 'Harry Potter'.

If you are looking to write just a humorous novel, i.e. not a parody, then perhaps you could take a look at some witty books that have been recommended by critics. Study the humour and see how you can incorporate it into your own story.

If you are a genuinely witty person, then you shouldn't have a problem producing a witty novel, as the humour will come naturally to your story. Obviously it depends on the type of humour that you are writing. If you are writing dark humour, then you may need a little careful how far you take it, as you want to avoid controversy, though some readers actually like controversial issues. Books like this will need to be marketed correctly to ensure that they reach the right audience.

You could always have the book critiqued or ask someone who you don't know very well to take a look at it, as they are more likely to give an honest opinion than close friends and family.
