Types of combinations
There are four main types of combinations:
1) horizontal combination
It is actually the combination of two business units at will which produce the same line of products or engage in sales activity at the same distribution level and serving the same geographic market.
The main advantages are:
Elimination of competition, availing of benefits of large sales production, using improved methods of production and better use of skilled persons.
2) vertical combination
It is the combination of firms engages in successive phases of the process of manufacturing or sales under an effective control of top management.
The main advantages are:
Elimination of wasteful competition, elimination of middleman, gaining control over the quantity and quality of goods and availability of raw material.

3) circular combination
Also known as mixed combination. It is the merging of firms producing altogether different commodities under the banner of central agency. For instance, a cotton mill combining with a plastic factory and a sugar industry is an example of circular or mixed combinations.  
4) diagonal combination
Diagonal combination is also called as service combination. It is brought about by combining two or more than two business units providing auxiliary services in the main line of production.
