A Group Discussion is actually a formal discussion which involves a number of people, usually 10-12 in a group. They are normally given a topic, a problem or an area of study to discuss and solve among themselves.
Group discussions is normally used by companies to assess the personality traits of individuals. A group of people is given a topic and are asked to discuss it among themselves for a certain time period. Then the group is asked to conduct various exercises. This enables the company to distinguish the team members according to their personality traits.
They are able to divide them into the following traits or categories:
- Team Player, Reasoning ability, Leadership, Flexibility, Assertiveness, Initiative, Creative, Inspiring ability, Listener, Awareness.
Thus, the organization is able to make better use of these people.
