The European Union, which is abbreviated as the EU, makes three types of Union law, namely treaties, institutional acts and case laws. Treaties are made by the member states of the European Union. They are the primary sources of law for the EU.

Institutional acts are a combination of regulations, directives, decisions, recommendations and opinions which are made by the EU institutions. They are the secondary sources of law. Case laws are defined as the interpretation of treaties and institutional acts which are carried out by the European Court of Justice (which is abbreviated as the ECJ) and the Court of First Instance (which is abbreviated as the CFI).

The whole body of the European Union, when taken together, is called acquis communautaire. It is broken into thirty-one chapters for the purpose of accession negotiations.
