How about just asking them? It's really rude to assume someone is something when their not.... That's how feelings get hurt and rumours start!

Well, if the person is your best friend like they say they are then they should always respect you for whom you are. Don't worry about it, seriously.
They may be shocked at first or whatever, but they will then accept it and then admire you for your courage and trust for them.
One of my best friends is gay - I'm a girl and he's a boy. I reacted badly :( not to his face though, he was afraid of telling me cos he thought i was homophobic. But now i don't care at all :) i used to be homophobic but when i knew he was gay, it changed me. :) don't be afraid, go for it.
