    Depressed patients particularly
the ones with melancholic features exhibit variety of sleep problems. These
usually include the early morning awakening, periodic awakening during the
night, and others as difficulty in falling asleep in different parts of day.
Researchers have found that many depressed patients also show a shorter than
usual latency to the first period of REM sleep and greater amount of REM early
in the night.  There is also a regulatory   failure of
interrelated biological systems so  their activity may be highly variable, unstable,
inappropriately responsive to incoming information  and
    desynchronized  from normal periodicals.
