The handover ceremony of the French presidency took place in Paris with the whilom French president Jacques Chirac formally handing over the presidency reins to newly elected French president Nicolas Sarkozy. On this important ocassion Nicolas Sarkozy pledged to make his rule memorable by enabling France to enter an era of positive changes and developments by learning lessons from the wartime sacrifices and gaining inspiration from the past to excel in the future.
The speech was made by President Sarkozy in the Elysee Palace, in which the president would reside till the last day he holds the presidential office. Furthermore Sarkozy also stated his intention to protect and defend the identity and independence of France. He also stressed the need to entrench the element of unity among the French people and regain the confidence and trust of the French people in the government. Nicolas Sarkozy is also the first president of France who was born after the World War II.
