What Additional Checks Can I Make To Ensure My Broadband Connection Is Up To Speed?

Answer Question

Apart from stuff like configuration and settings, there are several other things to check out. All of the following can negatively affect your broadband connection speed without you noticing.

Older phone equipment isn't designed to share a phone line with broadband. Unplug all your phones and then replace them into their micro-filter one by one to see if that makes a difference.

Ensure your wireless route is properly set up with a WEP security key. An unsecured router leaves the door open to anyone within range piggy backing onto your connection. And who needs unauthorised users eating their bandwidth?

When speed testing your connection, remember to do so when anti-virus and software updates aren't taking place. Close down messaging and chat software, Skype and any other software that's likely to grab resources otherwise this will skew the speed results.

If you are using one of those free with your broadband connection routers, consider trading up to a better model. Giveaway routers aren't exactly top of the range. Upgrading to a better model is likely to help ensure you get a stronger wireless signal, as well as improving overall performance and offering better functionality and features.
