Do Dogs Lactate After Menstruation?

Answer Question

1 Answer - Sort by: Date | Rating

No, a dog should not produce milk immediately following heat.  If the dog is pregnant expect puppies in 63-66 days.  Milk production in a pregnant dog can begin a few weeks to just a few days before labor begins.
Dogs can experience a false or pseudopregnancy.  Their body mimics being pregnant and these dogs can experience nipple development and produce milk.  This should not occur until 7-10 weeks after heat.  If your dog is experiencing pseudopregnancy seek veterinary medical attention.
