Kicking a round ball/object has been around many parts of Europe for hundreds of years. The formalisation of this into a game we all would recognise with rules however can only be traced in England before spreading to other countries.
For a long time many thought modern day football was invented by the English but a book found in Aberdeen written in the 16th Century suggests Scotland has a real claim on this. Its the first book written that details the modern game well before the English claim.
