It depends on the airline you fly with. Most allow 1 carry on and 1 checked, anything after that will be charged.

I have been on 2 recent flights. One was American Airlines. They charged $25 for one checked bag. The other was Southwest Airlines. There was no charge for one checked bag. Both would allow one carry on bag at no cost. Both were very picky about what was allowed in the checked bag (security). If you are unsure about that check before you arrive at the airport or you will be required to throw away certain items.

I am sorry, I said a wrong thing. It should have read...there was no charge for one "carry on" bag. Neither charged for a carry on. American charged $25 for one checked bag, Southwest did not. I hope I did not confuse you.
