You can do this but it will not turn off the check engine light. Federal law you know.
Go to an autoparts store and ask them to hook up their scanner. They will tell you the trouble code and probably turn off the light. But if the problem is not fixed the light will come back on.

I am a Chrysler cert MASTER TECH.....Yes it will turn off most common code light settings. If it is what they call a HARD code..which means something that effects emissions or may damage engine..it will keep it stored and turn the light back on. NOTICE!! Moat auto parts chain store will check the light for you...BUT IT IS AGAINST FEDERAL ANS SOME STATE LAWS to just turn it off without repairs or replacing defective part.
