The moderating variable is one that has a strong contingent effect on the independent variable and dependent variable relationship. That is the presence of a third variable modifies the original relationship between the independent and the dependent variables. For example it has been found that there is a relationship between the availability of reference manuals that manufacturing employees have access to and the product rejects. That is when workers follow the procedures laid down in the manual; they are able to manufacture products that are flawless. Although these relationships can be said to hold true generally for all workers it is nevertheless contingent on the inclination or urge of employees to look into the manual every time a new procedure is to be adopted.

An intervening variable is one that surfaces between the time the independent variables start operating to influence the dependent variable and the time their impact is felt on it. There is thus a temporal quality or time dimension to the intervening variable. The intervening variable surfaces as a function of the independent variables opening in any situation and helps to conceptualize and explain the influence of the independent variable on the dependent variable. So this is all about the moderating and intervening variables.

Intervening variable influence the dependent variable while moderating variable increase or decrease the the influence .for instance if we r seeing effects or televisions advertising on children consumption behavior cognition comes into the way thus it might totaaly change the DV .on the other hand moderating variable would be parental influence and peer pressure as they both would increase or decrease the Dv

Moderating variable is the variable that is incorporated in the analysis because it is considered that the variable may or may not have an impact on the dependent variable. For example, if you are studying the impact of change in inflation, supply, population on the demand on cement in the economy and you think that number of construction companies may or may not have an impact on demand so you can introduce it as a moderating variable. On the other hand an intervening variable is a hypothetical state that is used in empirical research and it explains the relationship between the dependent and the independent variables like intention, motivation etc.
