A router is a networking tool/device with the aim of selecting the appropriate path for to transfer data packages between different networks. This procedure is identified as routing

A router is a device that establishes the appropriate passageway for information package to pass from one network to another network. Routers join networks collectively for example a LAN to a WAN, a LAN to LAN and so on, in order to access or see the Internet. Routers utilize routing tables and headers to settle the finest passageway for the package to follow. Routing protocols might be utilized by routers to communicate with each other and make the most excellent path between any two nodes or hosts on a network system. Routers join networks that are not attached directly to one another. Routers should not be puzzled with hubs that only rebroadcast packages.

In order to direct the packages router can exchange information with other routers by using routing protocols, and by means of this information generates and keeps a routing table, or these tables can already be defined as fixed routes inside the router. It is not necessary for a router to utilize routing protocols. Routing is mainly linked with the Internet Protocol.

I have two question to ask:
      1) What information you exchange like?.....

The function of a router is to connect two different network , Example if u have ur office branch in india and other branch in USA and u have IP Address like 192.168.0.1 in india and in USA u have ip address 10.0.0.1, these are two different networks. If u want 2 communicate to ur USA office from india u can communicate through this. Means u have to connect router on both sides.

The Function of an Internet Router
All of these networks rely on NAPs, backbones and routers to talk to each other. What is incredible about this process is that a message can leave one computer and travel halfway across the world through several different networks and arrive at another computer in a fraction of a second!

The routers determine where to send information from one computer to another. Routers are specialized computers that send your messages and those of every other Internet user speeding to their destinations along thousands of pathways. A router has two separate, but related, jobs:

              * It ensures that information doesn't go where it's not needed. This is crucial for keeping large volumes of data from clogging the connections of "innocent bystanders."
              * It makes sure that information does make it to the intended destination.
