Maybe this video will help you out. Seems like they are toxic for consumption in large amounts but not so with just one.
It's used to keep the products safe from mold and it also keeps oxygen out of the sealed product for longer shelf life.
Here is a recipe that I have enjoyed over the years. To this recipe I have added bacon, green onions and green olives. Sometimes all at once or just one extra ingredient. It's a great basic cheese ball recipe. Enjoy!
