Instead of wasting time on here contact the police immediately. You must protect yourself. If he's contacting you contact law enforcement and let them deal with him. I seriously wish domestic battery and abuse was raised to a somewhat severe felony.

This is nothing to mess with.  Call the police.  He should be arrested.  Don't assume he won't do anything too dangerous (especially if he's apologizing and saying it won't happen again)    There are people with permanent injuries, or even dead and buried because they "knew he wouldn't really hurt" them.
