Those of us old enough, remember the Cold War "proxy wars" ... Where the US and USSR trained one side or the other.

Hey, here in the UK, the military and other advisors are getting all sorts of flak for training the Saudis! As for the Syrian rebels, well, that hasn't worked, on any level. We have handed the initiative to Putin without a whimper. Welcome to extended war in the middle East. (And I'm a "goddamned liberal".)
