I think it has to do with anatomy.  Same as "I worked my ass off".

But I wouldn't be surprised if it meant the animal(donkey),  because to train a horse you have to "break it".  A horse and a Donkey aren't too far off and break and bust aren't too far apart either.

I would say it meant part of your anatomy! I might be wrong but that's my take on that saying !
