What kinds of things might prevent you or be preventing you from actually hearing things that people are saying or trying to convey to you that you might otherwise normally hear and understand?

If that person has a 'tude I'll be less likely to listen. I'm always open to listen to anything a person has to say but I'm not a big fan of the 'tude.
