About Me
Originally I grew up in a suburb of Chicago; since leaving vet school I have practiced in Colorado and am currently in New Mexico. I work in a small animal and exotics practice in Albuquerque.
My family includes my wonderful husband Mike, an engineer and reserve army officer, Hildy-a Corgi/Sheltie mix and the perfect dog, Scout-a young, rowdy Border Collie, and Duke a mini-Rex rabbit.
My Interests
I also love outdoor activities. Hiking is my favorite pastime but I also enjoy camping, running, skiing, and rock climbing.
Often I can be found in the car or on a plane travelling--I have been to 37 of the 50 states and 15 countries.
I am always up for an adventure!

Hi Dr Ann... I've been searching the web for an answer and cant seem to get anywhere. My 1 1/2 year old Golden Retriever started acting like he's in pain yesterday. He's not nearly as active as usual, and will cry if you touch his hips...Im suspecting possibly Hip Dysplaysia, although its possible he injured himself playing.. But I really dont know. Is there something over the counter that I can give him to ease the pain, until we can get him checked by our vet? What age does Hip Dysplaysia show up? What are the symptoms, besides pain that I should look for? IF he does have Hip Dysplasia, what will the vet do for him? Thank you. I appreciate your help so much. ...Mati.
Hi, sorry to contact you this way, but you answered a question I had a few months back and since your an actual vet I thought you could help. I found a dog back during the last week of may or the first week of June, I have been taking care of her, but don't have the funds to take her to the vet and the shelter we have is a kill shelter and they told me that they would euthanize her because their full so I've had her ever since. I found out about two weeks ago that she is pregnant. She has had excellent care as I have Veterinary technician experience. I started monitoring the puppies heart beats and taking her temp. Rectally for the past week and it has been right around 99.7, then yesterday it got to 99.0 and she started leaking a clear mucus. I watched her carefully, have her whelping box all set up, all the emergency equipment ready to go. She has been sleeping more than usual, breathing a little harder( but not panting) and has stayed in her bed more, but she hasn't lost her appetite nor has she tried to push. It's been about 14 hrs. Since the discharge. What is your advise? Thanks so much!!
Hello there, long time not seeing you, how are you doing? Great I hope.
I just wanted to add that Zoe and Gizmo are not acting sick at all. They are acting like perfectly normal dogs. They are eating, drinking, very active, happy, content and not in any pain, according to the vet. They are on a High Quality, low protein wet food called Innova Adult Food! They have been keeping everything down and maintaining their weight. The vet told me that if he had not seen for himself on the bloodwork they had done, that they were so sick, he would never have suspected that they were sick in the first place, by the way they both look and act.
Hello! I have two Chihuahuas! Zoe 3.3 pounds and Gizmo 7.2 pounds. They have Liver Disease. Zoe's ALT Levels are 3500. Gizmo's ALT Levels are 2700. They are siblings.Their vet, will not put them on any meds, until he knows the cause. He thinks they both have the same Problem. He wants to do a Surgical Liver Biopsy on Gizmo. He said Zoe is too tiny and would not survive. He said it's still risky for Gizmo, but his chances are better. He said if we get the Biopsy, that he would give the same treatment to Zoe and Gizmo. If we don't, they would both have 1-12 years. I'm desperate, scared and don't know if I should do this or just let them both live the life they have left happy and content, until I would have to Euthanize.Vet ruled out Toxicity and Genetic Defects. Should I have this done? Is there another way, not so invasive? Please help me, help my babies? Thank You!
