I sympathise with you totally. What's really galling is that the people in charge of children's education don't seem to care. The emphasis these days seems to be on content and 'self expression' - never mind the spelling, punctuation or illegible handwriting. I know students nowadays have computers and spellcheckers (although I don't see much evidence of them using the latter !) but I feel we're in danger of putting all our eggs in the one technological basket. If there were a solar flare or nuclear blast which produced an electromagnetic pulse that rendered all these machines useless, what then ? These skills have taken centuries to hone and should be within everyone's capability. Sadly, I think the 'barbarians' are in the majority and 'dumbing down' a harsh reality of modern life.
