Thanks for your kind words! The busdepot has some aftermarket wires for around $60. I get lots of VW parts from Busdepot, need a van to haul the Robot around in! The busdepot wires are here: www.busdepot.com Are you sure that the wires are really bad? Its been a very long time since I had to replace any of my VW spark plug wires, they seem to last a very long time. You can test the wires with a meter, as long as they are physically ok they should be ok. Another good place for VW parts is www.partsplaceinc.com
This: forums.vwvortex.com Is for a 2000 car, might help.
One more thing! PLEASE watch out for the correct order of the wires! There are two tricks here: First trick: Only remove one wire at a time. This is a bit tricky on the VR6. This way there will be no question as to how to connect them up. Second trick: Make a picture. Maybe just with crayon, maybe a good digital photo. You also might want to try marking on the wire/engine/coil pack thingy with numbers. I like the picture thing myself. People mess up spark plug wires all the time.
Ok, helps to know more! Yes, you will need to remove those small screws. But more important you will need a spark plug wire removal tool. Your car did have one, it was plastic and snaped onto the rod that props up the hood. Probably long gone by now. They do sell better metal ones: www.zdmaktools.com If the wires have been on for a while then this tool is the only way to remove them, pulling too hard and they will just break!
