RE respect for engineers, I'd have to say I'm in that boat, too. I try not to speak ill of people: There are some that clam me up. The engineering societies I'm aware of are all at a loss as to how to get more folks interested in engineering. I think a good way to do that is to let kids get dirty interacting with the real world. All the good engineers I know of spent their childhood taking things apart (not necessarily putting them together again). The best have an interest in how things break. Based on the Blurtit science and math questions, there's way too little of that.
