About Me

I'm a teacher at a middle school in a very bad part of Los Angeles, don't know how much longer I can take it, I signed on to be an educator and instead I'm a policeman for eighth graders, it's a very bad situation, the school is in terrible physical shape, holes in the roof, lucky it doesn't rain here much, graffiti that gets washed off every day before school starts, gangs that run through...it's a hard spot to be in, which is why I'm looking for a job in Pasadena, I don't know how I can stay in education much longer, even though it's been my dream to be a shop teacher and show kids how to make things, to be creative, oh, and to coach the soccer team, TRYING to make these kids lives better, but don't feel like I'm making much of a dent in it.
I've got applications in at a bunch of different schools for the fall, but MAN, CA is in such a mess, could be I'm lucky to have a job at all, how did this state get in such a mess? You'd think they would have learned with Ronnie not to have hired movie people, but now we've got Arnold and he's running the state right into the ground.
Maybe I really CAN make a difference in where I am, guess I'd better get an attitude adjustment, right?

My Interests

Sports, anything that will get rid of adrenaline at the end of the day, have to run for a couple of miles as soon as the bell rings, like to fly kites, too, make my own, my girlfriend thinks it's pretty weird when I get so involved with the things, but hey, it's another way for me to stay sane, right? Sometimes I go up the coast and go surfing, you know, the usual California Dreamin' kinds of things...
I'm also thinking I'm going to go back to school and get a degree in Special Education, there's such a need for teacher's in that area, and those poor kids are always falling through the cracks, I sure would like to think I could help those who need it most...

I saw your question about engaging students (left a month ago). My mother works with the Alternative kids; expelled from their home schools for various reasons. The first six weeks of school has passed but I can hear her telling me things like Greet the students as they come in by their last name (Mr. Martine, Ms. Fisher), run the classroom with guidelines and expectations. Her class expectation #1 is "answer every adult in this buliding by responding yes, ma'am, no ma'am, yes, sir, no sir." Get the contol back in your classroom. There will always be one or more disruptive students they get ther power from other students. How do you engage the students? Mom says TEACH. Take an interest in the most horrible student of them all. What is he into? What does he want do when hes out of highschool. If he's not responding; make friends with his parents. Talk about only the positive things (he's a leader at school you've seen his art work he has talent) develop that! Who knows he may be the student closest to falling through the cracks. By attempting to save him/her you'll save the others.
