In fact the more well-read clergy don't expect you to take it as literal truth - only the fundamentalists. These people also expect you to believe the earth is 6000 years old and the first woman was created using a man's rib, so obviously a church which expects you to believe such things is wrong. Outside the US, most Christians actually don't take all this as literal truth, but as metaphor, philosophy, guide to livng etc.
