Koi fanciers take a great deal of pride in, and trouble over their fish, which can live for a very long time and grow very large. They are known by special japanese names for the different colour patterns and different scale patterns. Good large ones can cost thousands of dollars. They require a fairly deep pool if kept outside (over a metre), and a good water filtration system to keep them healthy. If you have pond plants then you need to protect the surface of the pot with large stones as Koi will rummage around the plant for food and destroy it. Outside, they will need protection from herons etc. Because they are long lived they can learn to recognise the person who feeds, and know when it is feeding time, thereby debunking that myth about fish having only a 5 second memory.
