Can you hear a sound if there is no air? Would it be louder or quieter if there wasn't

Sound actually travels better underwater than in air, and sound can be transmitted through dense solids, but much less efficiently.

In the absence of any matter,  as in the vacuum of outer space, sound can not be transmitted.
