Stay at home - holiday means doing nothing just relax and not run around from pillar to post.
Why not a week of each one?

The problem about staying home to relax is there's always a nagging guilt to do some kind of work at home ( ex: Paint the walls, do yard work.) But if you can relax then it might be less stressful than traveling.
Also when people find out that you are vacationing at home, they tend to come to you and ask for favours because you have time off. (( hide !!! ))

I did some of both when I was working. I would usually take a trip and return in time to spend a few lazy days at home.
