Those sewer pipes don’t fix or maintain themselves, Darren. Wastewater treatment facilities cost big money to build and operate. If you don’t have a private septic system, it’s likely you are part of a municipal waste management system. Those workers deserve pay too.

I’ve seen many places that either work those costs into their water bills, or as with you, bill them separately.

Around here a the sewage costs are based on water usage. It used to be if you were not hooked up to "city" / "county" sewage system you did not pay sewage fees. However three years ago after a long battle in the courts the county charges a "help clean up the bay fee" to all who have a septic and are not hooked up to the sewer system. We are still battling it all in the courts.

Darren, I have a septic tank that needs to get inspected every three years. I get it pumped out before every inspection so it's sure to pass. The township charges me $10.00 for the inspection and two years ago when I had both compartments of the tank pumped it cost me $45.00. I know people that live in the borough that have sewage bills.

No sewer bills. Septic. So if something goes wrong, I'm on my own.

I am on a septic tank now, but have paid a sewer bill in the past. They billed quarterly, every 3 months, and based it on your water. My only issue is there was no way to account for watering my lawn. So I paid for water treatment that never left my yard. My only option was to have a separate water line put in for a few thousand dollars. Since I knew I was going to be moving in  few years we opted not to do that.
