A handkerchief or as it is commonly called, a hanky, is usually a square piece of cloth, that is generally carried in one's pocket for one's hygienic needs like wiping of hands or covering the mouth during a sneeze. It is also used as an ornamental accessory in a suit pocket.

The handkerchief is said to have been created by Richard II of England. Throughout historical times, white handkerchiefs have been used instead of a flag to denote the surrendering of an army or a sign of a truce.

In ancient Greece pieces of cotton cloth that were doused with perfume, were often used as perspiration cloths by the upper class people. Nowadays in some cultures, the use of handkerchiefs is regarded as old fashioned and unhygienic. However, in countries like Japan using a handkerchief signifies that one is from a good education background.
