Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan her navigator ran out of gas looking for Howland Island and if they couldn't find Holland they would have looked for Gardiners Island now Nikumatoro, so I'm guessing they're somewhere in between the islands they were shooting for swimming with the fishes.

There were a number of problems associated with the leg from New Guinea to Howland Island.

Ran out of gas (or some problem with the plane) and crashed into the ocean... Or got caught in a storm and crashed into the ocean.

I'm 99.99% sure she wasn't taken by aliens.

And I think if the Japanese had shot her down or captured her, they would have come forward with it by now.
