Yes, slowly warm the pot for the coffee.

Set it under the tap and fill it with increasingly warm water. This will get the pot acclimated to the heat. When the water is very, very warm, let it set in the pot for 5 minutes while you make your coffee in the French press.

I use a one cup at a time machine, so I am not sure, but don't most coffee makers have a warmer at the bottom that is heating the pot as the coffee is brewing?
