An American is generally speaking a citizen of the Untied States of America. They do not need to be born there.

There are also Native Americans. They are descendants of the indigenous people of North America.

I was born in America and consider myself American even though my ansecistors were british and Scot-Irish.

I think the only really true American is the American Indian though.

There are many,  many people who disagree that only people in the the United States should be called "Americans". They feel that anyone that lives in any of the "Americas"-North America, Latin America, South America- can be called Americans.
