If toddlers and elderly (with arthritis) tend to wear velcro on their shoes, why don't the in-between ages? Is there a practicality reason there or is it just a fashion trend?  Why not Velcro for simplicity?

For me it's a fashion issue. I have not found a pair of Velcro shoes that I would consider wearing. If that time comes that I can't tie my own shoes, I'll be living in my flip flops. When it gets cold, I'll wear pull on boots.
