My dog of 12 years got sick and could barely walk, I took him out back dug a hole shot and buried him. Now my friend said I should have let the vet kill him because what I did was against the law. Is that true?

Legally your dog is viewed as your property.  In most states that is enough to allow you to put it down in your means.  I have nothing but respect for you and your ability to make this decision.
